The following Impatiens are all hardy to a greater or lesser degree in most parts of the UK. All are herbaceous although some may hang on well into December in a sheltered position.
- arguta. Deep
blue flowers on a rather sprawling plant, a good candidate for a hanging basket.
Flowers midsummer onwards. Likes damp shade. Ht 30cm
-
omeiana Compact plant with lovely primrose yellow flowers
over apple green leaves that develop reddish midribs. Flowers from midsummer
onwards. Likes damp shade and if happy will gently spread. Ht 30cm
-
omeiana 'Silver' Very similar in habit to I. omeiana but the
flowers are much paler, more cream and butter in colour. However this plant is
worth growing for the foliage alone as it has the appearance of being coated in
powdered silver. When grown in damp shade it can really stand out. Ht 30cm
-
stenantha Covered in small deep yellow 'Pixie hat' flowers from mid
summer onwards, likes damp shade and will occasionally seed itself about. Ht
20cm
-
tinctoria A larger Impatiens, this will grow to about a metre in
height and spread and is best suited to a mid border position in damp shade. The
flowers are large and, amazingly for an Impatiens, are quite strongly scented.
Forms a clump which slowly gets bigger.
-australis. A lovely half hardy
shrub producing masses of blue bell shaped flowers in an initial flush in May
and then throughout the summer. Related to Brugmansia. I have wintered this
plant outside in a sheltered position so it seems to be able to take several degrees of frost. Needs trimming to keep to a neat shape. Ht 3ft+
