HEDYCHIUM

Most of the Hedychium are usually available as bare rhizomes from February to April after which they are only sold as growing plants in 2 or 3 litre pots. All rhizomes are priced between £3.00 and £4.50, please email me for details and delivery costs.

Hedychium_Tara_1.jpg (18638 bytes) - coccineum `Tara´. Flowers from August to October. Easy to grow with large orange flowers. Hardy. Plant in rich moist but well drained soil. 4-5ft

- densiflorum. Flowers late July to October. Easy to grow, producing a golden yellow dense spike of flowers and hardy (to -15C).  Ht 3-4ft  Plant in rich moist but well drained soil.

Hed_Assam_orange.jpg (20361 bytes)- densiflorum `Assam Orange´. Flowers from late July to October. Tight apricot orange brush of flowers, very hardy (to -15C), probably the easiest of the Hedychiums to grow. Ht 3-4ft  Plant in rich moist but well drained soil.

-'Elizabeth' Produces fantastic spikes of scented pink flowers on stems that are tinted red. Height 5-6ft. Fairly hardy so is ok outside in most areas but needs a warm position to do well or else move into a conservatory.

Hedychium_coronarium2.jpg (9051 bytes) - coronarium. Flowers from August to November. This is the ´Butterfly Ginger´, forming medium sized stems with fragrant large pure white flowers opening in succession from late summer though to early winter.  Hardy if mulched well. Plant in rich moist but well drained soil. Requires a warm, protected position to flower well. 4-6ft

Hedychium_coronarium_var_chrysoleucum.jpg (7019 bytes)- crysoleucum Flowers late July to November. Forms medium stems with very fragrant white flowers with a touch of yellow in the centre.  I've found it does quite well as a cut flower, lasting a week indoors and filling the house with its scent. Seems to be hardier than coronarium. Plant in rich moist but well drained soil in a warm sheltered position to get the best from it. 4ft

Hedychium_flavescens.jpg (13000 bytes)-flavascens Needs a sunnier position than many of the other Hedychiums as it is quite late in  flowering but is reputed to have the best scent of all the Hedychiums.  Fairly hardy but is probably better as a conservatory plant. 6ft

Hedychium_gardnerianum.jpg (19815 bytes)- gardnerarium  Also known as Kahili Ginger, this plant can reach 5-6ft in height and produces large inflorescences of yellow heavily scented blooms. It generally flowers best when grown in a large pot and is allowed to become crowded. It likes a warm position and will succeed outdoors but requires protection from frost.

Hedychium greenei3.jpg (8469 bytes) - greenii. Flowers from August to October. Grown primarily for its gorgeous foliage that is deep green on the upper surface and solid, dark red-maroon beneath, stems are also deep red. Bright orange/scarlet large flowers late in the year. Does well in moist conditions. Hardy to -10C and easy. Ht 4-5ft  Plant in rich moisture retaining soil.

HELLEBORUS
