ABUTILON

Abutilon vitifolium.jpg (25476 bytes) - vitifolium. Flowers from April to May. Deciduous shrub producing large mauve flowers in spring and early summer. Fully Hardy. Plant in ordinary soil. 10ft    

ACACIA

Acacia dealbata.jpg (67236 bytes) - dealbata. Flowers from April to May. Delicate pinnate foliage, highly scented yellow flowers, can be kept small in a pot or trimmed down to bush size. Hardy. Prefers full sun, in ordinary soil. Likes a sheltered position. 15ft    

ACANTHUS

Acanthus_mollis.jpg (151403 bytes) - mollis. Flowers from July to September. `Bears Britches´ - Large glossy leaves and cream and pink/purple spires of hooded flowers on tall spikes, a good architectural plant. Fully Hardy. Prefers light shade, in ordinary soil. 3ft        

AEONIUM

-arboriform. Flowers in August. Fantastic plant for a hot patio, very architectural in shape, succulent green leaves arranged in whorls. Tender, will take a degree of frost but nothing more. Prefers full sun, in average moist but well drained soil. 2-3ft

Aeonium schwartzkopf.jpg (53218 bytes)-arboriform`Swartzkopf´. Flowers in August. Fantastic plant for a hot patio, very architectural in shape, glossy black leaves arranged in whorls. Tender, will take a degree of frost but nothing more. Prefers full sun, in average moist but well drained soil. 2-3ft       

 Aeonium arboreum atropurpureum.jpg (14385 bytes)- arboriform atropurpureum. Flowers in August. Fantastic plant for a hot patio, very architectural in shape, shiny leaves are arranged in whorls, purple on the outside, green in the middle. Tender, will take a degree of frost but nothing more. Prefers full sun, in average moist but well drained soil. 2-3ft        

Aeonium_tabuliforme.jpg (21255 bytes) - tabuliforme. One of the most attractive of the the Aeoniums forming a single very dense flat plate-like geometrical rosette of succulent green leaves, up to 12 inches in diameter. Never produces offsets in its normal form so has to be grown from seed and so is only rarely available. Tender, will take a couple of degrees of frost if kept dry. Prefers full sun, in ordinary well drained soil. Wind tolerant. 6in.   

Aeonium haworthii.jpg (926863 bytes)- haworthii.  A sun loving plant offsetting freely to form a lush green domed mound with leaf margins flushed red in summer, height to about 1ft. Tender, will take a couple of degrees of frost if kept dry

Aeonium haworthii blue form.JPG (561259 bytes)- haworthii. 'Blue form' Similar to the above but with a distinctly blue colour to the leaves in the first half of the year although this seems to disappear by autumn. Tender, will take a couple of degrees of frost if kept dry.

Aeonium haworthii variegata 4.JPG (693439 bytes)- haworthii variegata. Lovely variegated form, slower growing but very pretty.

Aeonium sp. variegata 3.JPG (584143 bytes)- sp. variegated.  A variegated Aeonium that I don't have a name for!  It mounds up quite well and has rather sticky resinous leaves that are edged with white and purple markings in the centre.

 

 


AESCLEPIAS

Aesclepias_curassavica.JPG (26059 bytes) - curassavica 'Milkweed' Colourful plant from the Americas that butterflies love. Tender. Likes a warm sheltered position in loamy soil. 2ft        


AGAVE

Agave americana 2.jpg (37451 bytes) - americana. Architectural plant with stiff glaucous leaves tipped with very sharp spikes. Half hardy. Prefers full sun, in average moist but well drained soil. 2-3ft    

- victoria-reginae. A native from the mountains of northern Mexico. The wide, thick leaves are toothless and spined only at the tip. The leaf margins are marked with broad white stripes. Half hardy and slow growing!. Prefers full sun, in well drained soil or compost. Likes a sheltered position. 1ft 


ALOE

- aristata. Small clumping species bearing orange red flowers in late spring to summer. Seems to be a lot hardier than would appear as its survived quite happily outside in several locations in my garden now for a number of years. Height 6ins.

- vera. Large fleshy grey green leaves make an interesting architectural plant, used medicinally for burns worldwide. Half hardy if kept very dry, this has survived hard frosts outside when kept up against the side of the house. Prefers full sun, in ordinary well drained soil. 1-2ft     

 


ANGELICA

angeli~1.jpg (5158 bytes) - gigas. Flowers from June to August. A biennial, it produces domed flower heads of an astonishingly deep beetroot red on thick branching stems; wonderful for architectural effect in the garden and good for cutting. Fully Hardy. Plant in ordinary soil. 4-5ft    

ASTELIA

Astelia_Silver_Spear.JPG (19152 bytes) - chatamica `Silver Spear´. Splendid plant with broad sword like lustrous silver grey evergreen foliage. Appears immune to wind so suitable for windswept & seaside locations.  Hardy. Prefers full sun to light shade, in ordinary soil. 2-3ft    

Astelia_Westland.JPG (20711 bytes)- chatamica 'Westland' .  Similar in habit to 'Silver Spear' but with a pronounced  metallic burgundy sheen to the foliage. Hardy.  Prefers full sun to light shade, in ordinary soil. 2-3ft
